And indeed I'm not disappointed.
Have only managed the first five tracks so far, but I'm delighted and genuinely surprised by these first impressions. I can hear suggestions of Aerial here, and parts of the 9th Wave. On Snowflake, I'm even recalling 2 tracks from the The Dreaming (I'll leave you to guess which ones they are). But what makes this such a surprise to me - especially the first 3 tracks - is the looseness of the structures. Studio improvisation devoid of later refinement and re-recording. In short, a jam session, where whole sections of spontaneity are used wholesale rather than being mined for just a moment or two of gold. I'm hearing something with acres of space and which is hugely reflective. Kate has created sparse soundscapes to draw you in and which then leaves you to emote around what you may find there. She has created something that is expansive out of really very little. And that's a very different approach for her. Hinted at in places by parts of Aerial certainly, but to compare this to much of her previously densely arranged and highly detailed material, is like comparing night with day. Oh and how those sparse, plaintive empty soundscapes are hugely evocative of vast featureless snow covered and icy plains! That is just so clever..
More later of course, but only after much more listening. I need the night to be over so I can take the long route to work in the morning, with 50 Words safe and secure in the CD player.
Happy listening to you guys too. Meet you later for more of a chat.
