When you hear this statement, do you perk up your ears and check said artist out? I usually don't (NO ONE CAN COMPARE TO KATE!) but fell for it recently. (I still have yet to check out Tori Amos if you can believe that! ) but WXRT played a song just after making the statement in the title of this thread by a woman named Imogen Heap. I fell for it, and got the cd in the mail yesterday. It sounded better on the radio. She sounds more like Alanis Morrisette than Kate to me. Not a bad disc, but I have other stuff I'd rather be listening to. If you like Alanis at all I would VERY HIGHLY recommend her. But I refuse to fall for this "She's often compared to Kate Bush" crap again...

I will admit, I am a big Tori fan. Or, I used to be before she jumped the shark and made "Strange Little Girls". Anyway, I can not see why everyone compares Kate to Tori other than the fact they they are both carbon-based life forms.
Also, check out Tori's earlier stuff. You can't go wrong with "Little Earthquakes", her first album; or if you want to go straight to what I think is her best album, try "From the Choirgirl Hotel".

Well my library has The Beekeeper so that one I can check out for free. I've just been putting it off because I've been into so much great new (to me) music lately. Happy 500 StevO!

Why listen to a copy, when I have the real thing that I have already paid for? I don't mind real new talent, but covering old territory gets boring. As for Tori, I fell for the same thing with her, and I am still not a fan. I don't dislike her, but it just didn't click with me. I still love Crucify, Winter and Silent All These Years, but they remind me the most of Kate. No one does Kate... quite like, well, Kate. Isn't that why we love her? ;D I've got so much other music I'm listening to, I'd don't go for "the derivative" very much anymore.

But I refuse to fall for this "She's often compared to Kate Bush" crap again... Which CD is it? I have I Megaphone which I like somewhat and Speak For Yourself which I like too, though somewhat less than I do the earlier album. psst... get Boys for Pele! If not then try Scarlet's Walk. The Beekeeper since it's free at your library is also a good choice. Imogen has an interestinjg style but yeah she doesn't sound anything like either Kate musically or in her approach to music. ok... so who do I think is most closely comparable to Kate? Musically, no one - I consider Kate to be absolutely unique. Still, I do find some that I consider to follow a similar approach to music... oh letsee... well well gosh... Tori is the closest in both quality of match and longevity of career. Both artists: - write semi-confessional lyrics with a female perspective. - have become less commercial as their careers have lengthened. Tori is the second artist I like (Bob Dylan being the first) whom I consider to have made a conscious decision to jettison fans, not only with the quite good covers album Strange Little Girls (but I still consider you to be a great guy Stev0 even if I do disagree with most everything I notice you saying ) but also with Boys for Pele. - have an overlapping fanbase. - operate independently (more than most anyway) of current musical styles. - do not shy away from edgy subject matter. ok, well anyway, here's a few other artists I think operate from the same musical well as does Kate. Carole King - pick up Tapestry, Sheila. Sarah Slean - Her latest, Day One, is very nice and starts out with the line "A little blood and vomit on the car seat." Very highly recommended! alright, here's my darkhorse candidate - The Cure! And if we're going to include the guys, then of course, Peter Gabriel.

But I refuse to fall for this "She's often compared to Kate Bush" crap again... I meant to comment on this, but in the rapturous surroundings I found myself in as I thought of Kate, Tori, and Sarah it slipped away unnoticed. The blame for this comparison is not with Imogen but with the person who made the comparison. It's a lazy, stupid comparison... music listeners are too soft. It's a shame how new artists, as a result of these comparisons, have it so much harder than did the "pioneers" who weren't simarlarly saddled with "sound like" comments.

Oh Gawd I've started a freakin' Tori thread! I had Tapestry on vinyl. I got Speak for Yourself damn I should have got the other one huh? But the song I heard on the radio really wowed me! Second time I heard it, it wasn't as good as I remembered. I agree with you Xan, Tori never grabbed me but I don't dislike her. ::Hearing Kate imitating Jan from the Brady Bunch---"TORI TORI TORI!!!!::

Where else can one get congratulated for blubbering on incessantly about Kate and other off the wall topics that in real life I get scorned for? ;D (I mean no offence StevO, hell I started after you and have more posts than you!)

No offense to Ms Amos; but this article from an obscure (American, no less!) source that I ran across was amusing, and on the money, to me, in light of this thread: Click here (Artvoice.com)

Oh Gawd I've started a freakin' Tori thread! heh phobiabusting And like Kate, Carole has never been too fond of touring. I like the earlier album more than I do the one you have though I'm not crazy about either - Y'now... you can easily sample entire albums before buying 'em these days. And speaking of albums, take a look at the Unbehagen thread. Glorious news! Well you haven't heard any of her albums, unless it's happened very recently; it's not too surprising that you neither particularly like or dislike her.

This site has a "who do people who listen to this artist also listen to" listing - pretty interesting, I think. I haven't checked to see how exactly they're arriving at their listings but I do like how the names move - very hypnotizing. www.music-map.com/kate+bush.htmlcopy the url, if you're interested in checking it out, into your browser since it appears it doesn't want to highlight the entire thing. And of course, you can check a great many artists out this way. And hey, she's never compared to Kate, so maybe she'll be ok. Have you heard Mirah? And here's who the site that tracks my pc plays says are similar artists to Kate: Antony and the Johnsons Joni Mitchell Eurythmics Suzanne Vega Prince Aimee Mann Happy Rhodes Talk Talk Well, they feel they have to list some for everyone, so don't take it too seriously. The most pleasantly surprising listing for me is Antony.
