What is all this then? The knight should come in now with the rubber chicken. I will defend this song until the day I die--a great collaboration! It is not as bad as her re-vamping "Sisters of the Moon" by Stevie Nicks after waiting 12 years for something new from her. (I'm talking about How to Be Invisible) You know, I could have just listened to Tusk for the past 12 years. Sorry--just defending this song. Am I the only one who likes Why Should I Love You???

Am I the only one who likes Why Should I Love You??? Not at all - I think it's great. Always liked and admired it as a first rate collaboration (even if Kate did have to do most of the work).

I know WSILY is not a great song, but chapter can imply something heavy, yet the song seems so light... I love the Trio/Kate opening... The chapter counsels a break from a thunderhead of judgment... The song seems to be an angelic distraction on a saving wonder (the song uses the colors of the Christian calendar, and rings out like Easter Sunday bells?) ... Now, Christianity aside, the idea of resurrection also taps into a belief in Karmic reincarnation, and the suffering of (or escape from) Samsara... So maybe WSILY simply raises our hats to the Strange Phenomena? EDITYou Tube is showing a "Kate Bush - Why Should I Love You (demo)": www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbP-dapt09QKate Bush - Why Should I Love You (demo)This chapter says "Put it out of your mind" The pain will go Just give it time This chapter says "Are you Trying?" This chapter says "How to forget" You should not speak of it You should not think it even Because it is forbidden Of all the people in the world Why should I love you? There's just something about you There's just something about you If I could sing like a blackbird Just like my heart was filled with summer Of all the people in the world Why should I love you? Have you ever seen a picture Of Jesus laughing? Do you think He had a beautiful smile? A smile that healed? A smile that could take you home? Who else could help me now? Who else would understand? I have no choice in the matter Of all the people in the world Why should I love you? There's just something about you There's just something about you If I could sing like a blackbird Just like my heart was filled with summer Of all the people in the world Why should I love you? The fine purple The purest gold The red of the sacred heart The grey of the ghost The "L" of the lips are open To the "O" of the host The "V" of the velvet The "E" of my eye The eye that closes The eye that sees The "I" that loves you The eye that weeps The fine purple The purest gold The red of the sacred heart The grey of the ghost The "L" of the lips are open To the "O" of the host The "V" of the velvet The "E" of my eye The eye that closes The eye that sees The "I" that loves you The eye that weeps Of all the people in the world Why should I love you? The fine purple The purest gold The red of the sacred heart The grey of the ghost The "L" of the lips are open To the "O" of the host The "V" of the velvet The "E" of my eye The eye that closes The eye that sees The "I" that loves you The eye that weeps

Yes, isn't the demo version great? I think it's much more heartfelt and natural, almost, than the official version. It's a very beautiful, emotional song, but I've always thought that the chorus and backing vocals on the album version sort of drowned the power of the lyrics and Kate's voice. I agree with you, Tannis, that it's a very spiritual song. I think it's about finding grace and healing and love in the deepness of sorrow, and the real deeper understanding of life and love that comes from the acceptance of a real, painful sadness, even when it seems the world has fallen to pieces. For me, The Red Shoes is such a raw, emotional album, and that this version of WSILY really presents the essence of it- there is so much suffering in it, I think, but also so much hope and so much love. It shows the beating heart that emerges when all a persons feelings of order and safeness are taken away, the nourishing rain of a storm.

I heard this on another forum. I think this is the version before the Prince influence.

For me, The Red Shoes is such a raw, emotional album.. Glad someone else thinks this. I've always felt this album hides it's true light under a return to the more conventional music forms Kate left behind after Never For Ever. Maybe because of this, it's big themes of loss and rememberance are overlooked. Kate is still capable of being profound even when she flirts with the ordinary.. oh, and thanks for the link to the demo. Interesting - love to hear works in progress - but much prefer the final version.

I think this track did turn out OK, but it certainly wasn't what Kate originally planned.
I've just talking to someone who has, shall we say, very good Prince connections, and apparently what Kate had in mind was for Prince to put on some multilayered vocal harmonies, but instead he was snowed under with work at the time (and he's also reportedly a bit absent minded) and he ended forgetting the original request and just supplied his sort of standard Prince funky workout. He even apparently screwed up the lyrics...
Kate of course was under no obligation to use any of this stuff.
I also heard that although Prince was keen to work with Kate he managed to arrange it so that she ended up having to call him to make the first move in regards to working together. I must say, that's quite a feat, considering our Kate's reputation.

Interesting. I think the demo is really just stunningly beautiful as it is, but it would have been wonderful to see how it turned out if Kate had gotten her way with this.

I've done some googling based on what I heard yesterday, and I guess maybe some of this is old news to some KB fans. Certainly a lot of the info I heard is out there on the 'net already. The information comes from one of Prince's former engineers, Michael Koppelman. I don't know him directly, but I know a someone "in the biz" who does. He's a huge KB fan himself, like all good people are. --Paul--

Why Should I Love You This one actually was recorded in collaboration with Prince - Kate went to see him at a gig and was flattered to be asked to meet him after the show, when they discussed a collaboration. Unable to physically get together in the same room, they swapped multi-track tapes, with a slave reel returning from Prince's Paisley Park studio covered in vocals, guitar solos and keyboards. "The problem then was to put the track back together into something resembling its original form while retaining the best of what Prince had done. He hadn't added one of the vocal parts which would have been particularly good for him, so it basically took two years to put it back together. What's left is his lead guitar, some digital synths and some chorus vocals. Then Lenny Henry came in to do a vocal on the end - he's really got a great voice and ought to be doing a serious record of his own."
