"B.F.P.O.*" Army dreamers. "Mammy's hero." "B.F.P.O." "Mammy's hero."
Our little army boy Is coming home from B.F.P.O. I've a bunch of purple flowers To decorate a mammy's hero.
Mourning in the aerodrome, The weather warmer, he is colder. Four men in uniform To carry home my little soldier.
"What could he do? Should have been a rock star." But he didn't have the money for a guitar. "What could he do? Should have been a politician." But he never had a proper education. "What could he do? Should have been a father." But he never even made it to his twenties. What a waste -- Army dreamers. Ooh, what a waste of Army dreamers.
Tears o'er a tin box. Oh, Jesus Christ, he wasn't to know, Like a chicken with a fox, He couldn't win the war with ego.
Give the kid the pick of pips, And give him all your stripes and ribbons. Now he's sitting in his hole, He might as well have buttons and bows.
Ooh, what a waste of all that Army dreamers, Army dreamers, Army dreamers, oh...
("B.F.P.O.") Did-n-did-n-did-n-dum... Army dreamers. Did-n-did-n-did-n-dum... ("Mammy's hero.") ("B.F.P.O.") Army Dreamers. ("Mammy's hero.") ("B.F.P.O.") No harm heroes. ("Mammy's hero.") ("B.F.P.O.") Army dreamers. ("Mammy's hero.") ("B.F.P.O.") No harm heroes.

MM Al, Hi there. It all seems to be in place, NFE & TWS, are both listed by album. From what I can see in the alphabetical listings, all is well. Maybe the page did not download properly.

I had no troble finding the ALBUM'S just not this song. It is gone.

Once you're there, click on the 'alphabetical' heading. My point being the listing is blank - not the lyrics.

That's modern PCs for you..
Sometimes it seems we succeed in spite of, rather than because of!
Were it not for this particular Forum, the damn thing would probably be off for days if not weeks at a time..

Is this song referencing a specific war/conflict/place overseas? 'British Soldiers returning home to the BFPO - British Forces Post Office. That is all just the backdrop to the social commentary that lack of opportunity gives politicans pawns to conduct warfare. This song also inspired the name for the band "Remo Zero" Whose band members while growing up misheard the lyruc "Mammy's hero".

'British Soldiers returning home to the BFPO - British Forces Post Office. That is all just the backdrop to the social commentary that lack of opportunity gives politicians pawns to conduct warfare. OK. I believe however that the commentary extends further: What a waste -- Army dreamers. Ooh, what a waste of Army dreamers. It's not true that someone who died in a worthy cause wasted his life - is it? It may be true that he was duped, or basically economically coerced, into the conflict but if the cause is just then the sacrifice, his life, was not a waste. My view is that in addition to saying that the poor are more likely to die than are the rest that Kate is additionally saying the cause they died for is an unjust (or dishonest) one. and now unrelated: Tears o'er a tin box. Oh, Jesus Christ, he wasn't to know, Like a chicken with a fox, He couldn't win the war with ego.Do you remember the ad the Marines ran a few years back that said that if you were to join the few and the proud you would then be on your way to fighting a dragon? These people really shouldn't be allowed to have guns.

I agree with your assessment.... 'British Soldiers returning home to the BFPO - British Forces Post Office. That is all just the backdrop to the social commentary that lack of opportunity gives politicians pawns to conduct warfare. I don't think a life is wasted when sacrificed for the right cause. Moreover, I don't believe Kate, philosophically. does either. In "Oh England My Lionheart" there is a true sense of pride in country and culture. And in 'Army Dreamers,' even though a specific conflict does not appear to be in play as a part of the theme; it does give the impression that the cause is unjust. And a bigger consideration that I think could be a part of the message here is not just the lack of opportunity - but the sheer waste of potential in youth. That is, never getting to do the things adults aspire to or that add value to a culture. The manipulation of ignorance and the propaganda used to whip teenagers into a mindset of warriors is sadly a function of parts of government - even with the tacit approval of society. So that being said, I believe Kate's greater point is that war is so much more of a waste of human resources. Culture and society could be much better served if young people were allowed to flourish. Outside WWII, I doubt that there's been a just war since. Would Ms Bush agree? The message being that young people are no match for the crafty and sneaky foxes that run the show. Right? Precisely the propaganda I'm referring to. EDIT - Sorry for the butchery. You may read this post now.
