Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me
They arrived at an inconvenient time I was hiding in a room in my mind They made me look at myself. I saw it well I'd shut the people out of my life
So now I take the opportunities Wonderful teachers ready to teach me I must work on my mind. For now I realise Everyone of us has a heaven inside
Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot Them heavy people help me Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me
They open doorways that I thought were shut for good They read me Gurdjieff and Jesu They build up my body, break me emotionally It's nearly killing me, but what a lovely feeling!
I love the whirling of the dervishes I love the beauty of rare innocence You don't need no crystal ball Don't fall for a magic wand We humans got it all, we perform the miracles
Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot Them heavy people help me Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me Rolling the ball, rolling the ball...

As many of you know, this was my introduction to Kate Bush. I saw her perform this 'piece' live on "SNL" It blew me away. Totally original. It was an appropriate theme as well for me. The 'Heavy People' I would encounter both musically and philosophically were often because of the influence and inspiration of Kate Bush.
Has anyone else seen this tape? I understand it was not included in the 'SNL' music compilation. What a shame too, I would love to have a copy.

<snipped> Has anyone else seen this tape? I understand it was not included in the 'SNL' music compilation. What a shame too, I would love to have a copy. About an hour ago, I was thinking about how unfortunate it is that Kate's appearance on SNL was edited out of the tape that is available for purchase. As I was thinking about this, it occured to me that perhaps I could set u my DVR to record old SNL reruns whenever they came on, and eventually the episode with Kate might get recorded. So I got onto my DVR and requested a search for "Saturday Night Live". Most of the "hits" that came back were for current episodes, but I finally found one from the 78-79 timeframe that airs on on NBC every Sunday at 3 a.m.. Here is the amazing part though: the episode airing this Sunday appears to be Kate's episode (the Dec 9, 1978 episode)! The program schedule says that the host is Eric Idle, and he was the host for that episode. However, it doesn't mention Kate. I understand that Eric Idle also hosted a different episode of SNL, so the one I found may be that one instead. But I really think this is the Dec 9 episode because the episode being shown next Sunday in the same time slot appears to be the Dec 16 episode (it is hosted by Elliot Gould). I am recording it and I will have my fingers crossed until then (except when I need them for other things, of course ;D). I have never been a gambler, but if this is the right episode AND Kate hasn't been edited out, I may have to go buy my very first lottery ticket ever...

We've never had SNL on our TV screens, but I've read about this appearance on GW. I'm also aware that it was Al's introduction to Kate. Prior to you guys in the States seeing this, Kate did the rounds of the British interview/light entertainment programmes, performing Them Heavy People, but I was already a new convert by this stage (as I recall Wuthering had just been released). This was the first televised interview with her I recall seeing. Seems somehow fitting that Al & I now post together on this Forum, having had virtually the same introduction to Kate Bush, and after all these years. Just goes to show we are nothing if not consistent and probably older than Moses.. ;D And I agree Sal, an amazing coincidence - or possibly synchronicity.. I hope it's the right edition of the show for you.

Wow. That was really cool! It explains a lot about the song, I thought.
I actually had no idea who he was at first...

The episode of SNL with Kate in it has been aired on US television--I think it was on E! channel on cable. It is the Dec. 9th 1978 episode. I managed to tape it when it was last on, but I can't find the tape! I may have accidentally taped over it, for which I hate myself. The SNL re-runs that are shown are edited down from 90 minutes to 60, and often some of the musical performances are cut. If I recall correctly, the SNL re-run did contain "Man With The Child In His Eyes," but I'm not sure if it had "Them Heavy People." Unfortunately NBC, in their infinite wisdom, hasn't re-released those performances and has forced YouTube to remove all NBC material from their website. The SNL clips of both songs do occasionally turn up on bootleg DVD's, though.
The version of "Man" has Kate sitting on top of the grand piano, which is played by Paul Shaffer, who is now the musical director on the David Letterman talk show. He has a full head of hair (!) and some big Elton John-ish glasses. After the song is over, he leans over and says something inaudible to her. Curious to know what it was. Any lip-readers?

Welcome to the forum tomi. I don't remember the interlude you reference. I wish I had a copy to try and figure it out (I am a decent lip reader) What I do recall, and have posted as much here before, is that Schaefer called that performance (paraphrasing here) 'the strangest performance he'd ever experienced' ;D

He doesn't say much--just leans over and says a few words to her. Probably "Nice job," or something like that. But it's the kind of human touch that's nice to see.

What's SNL? Is it Saturday Night Live? Explain what she is wearing and anything else you can. Yes--it used to be a great show, funny and groundbreaking, but now, after 30+ years, I find it's pretty tired. Let's see--in "Man With The Child" she's wearing a gold spangly leotard and sitting on top of the grand piano while Paul Shaffer plays (see post above). You can hear strings, etc. from offstage somewhere. In "Heavy People" she's wearing the raincoat and hat get-up that she wears in the video for that song. I'm pretty sure it's the house band backing her, although they can't be seen on camera. That show always had EXCELLENT musicians, but the arrangement is a little tricky and seems to falter a tiny bit in the transitions, especially into and out of the "Rolling the ball" part. All in all, though, it's a great bit of video from early in her career and one of the few times she has been seen by the general public in the US.

I see that they've started releasing full seasons Of SNL on DVD (actually only season 1 at present), but at least there's a high possibility for some decent quality footage of Kate's performance on DVD rather than the slightly dodgy (bootleg) quality available at present.

Yes--something to look forward to. Let's hope that they don't do any moronic editing, and let's hope they hurry up. The show started in the fall of '75, so Kate's appearance would be Season 4.

I'll bet they edit her performance out. Aren't I always the sunshine? DVD TV sets are notorious for removing songs and portions they can't retain the rights to. I'm sure there will be some legal issue they'll get tangled in with her and it won't be there... holding to my theory that the powers that be wish to remove her past performances from the pop consciousness. But, hope still remains...
