Q. In your opinion, what constitutes character in an individual?... A. Self control and the obligation to act in accordance with one's personal conscience for the wider good knowing that there will be unwanted consequences or punitive action as a result.. On reading that back, I realise that it may define a terrorist or other fanatic. Unfortunate, as I can't see how my personal definition may be amended. Anyone?

Character does not imply good or bad, IMO, rather just as you describe. Behavior by persons with flawed character may be reviled, but it is consistient with their precepts of protocol or disdain for thereof. To exhibit good character, I think one must have conviction based on the advancement of a greater good and the ideals that bind people together.
